The final event in this year's festival programme is a fusion of music and film. Opera Holland Park's Director of Opera, James Clutton, will discuss the process of filming and editing live sound and on-stage action. He will intersperse his talk with extracts from the 2019 production of Verdi's 1859 opera, a tale that is fuelled by political intrigue, illicit love and a baleful prophecy.

Opera Holland Park (OHP) performances are on a stage that is relatively wide for the size of the auditorium. That alone creates challenges when filming. Add to this the balance between voices across the stage and the orchestra, then there is even more of a challenge. This event will be in insightful look at opera performance from behind a number of cameras. This event is an element of OHP's new initiative Opera on Film, part of their outreach and education Inspire programme.

Un ballo in maschera was originally censored in the wake of the attempted assassination of Napoleon III. It is based on the story of Gustav III, the Swedish king who was murdered during a masked ball, it sets a tense love triangle against the background of a murderous conspiracy. Reason and superstition vie for supremacy as Amelia struggles to remain faithful to her husband in an opera that was dubbed ‘Verdi’s Tristan’. Vivid choral writing – the closing hymn perhaps Verdi’s finest – and glittering dance music provide counterpoint to an intimate portrait of three people whose conflicted loyalties are tested in public and private ....

OHP believes that everyone should have access to the finest live musical and theatrical performances, regardless of age, income or education. Their Inspire Programme is at the heart of this.

We are delighted to be bringing extacts of their 2019 production of Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera to the screen in our 2020 festival. The production was directed by Rodula Gaitanou and conducted by acclaimed local resident Matthew Kofi Waldren.
